In Haiti there is no free school system. Most people in Haiti are very poor and cannot afford to send even one child to school. Often if a child does start school he may go one year and not the next due to lack of funds. Of the children who attend school the majority complete less than the equivalent of fifth grade. Less than one half the population of Haiti is able to read and write. Supports from non-profit organizations have provided much needed services to Haiti— especially to the rural poor.
